Order Routing Rules Overview
Order routing rules are crucial for ensuring that orders are dispatched to the most appropriate warehouse, optimizing the fulfillment process, and minimizing shipping costs.
If you have no WMS system connected, configuring order routing rules is unnecessary. This feature is available only when you are connected to a Warehouse Management System (WMS), such as Item WMS or UNIS Wise. Based on the routing rules, orders from third-party channels will be assigned to specific warehouses. For more details on warehouse system, refer to WMS Integration (opens in a new tab).
Order routing rules are divided into three key sections: Sales Order Routing, Exception Handling, and Customized Routing Rules.
Setting Up Sales Order Routing
Sales order routing rules determine how orders are assigned to warehouses. The system offers default rules that you can customize according to your specific requirements. These default rules include:
Default Order Routing Rules | Description |
---|---|
No Split Order | Orders are fulfilled entirely by a single warehouse. * This rule is enabled by default. |
Allow Split Fulfillments | If no single warehouse can fulfill the entire order, items will be shipped from multiple locations. * Enabling this rule overrides the No Split Order rule. |
Assign Warehouse by Zip Code | Orders are routed to warehouses within a specified zip code range. * For setting up zip codes, refer to Warehouse Management (opens in a new tab). |
Assign Warehouse by Accounting Code | Orders are assigned to warehouses based on the accounting code of the warehouse. * For more details, refer to Company & Facilities (opens in a new tab). |
Stay Within the Destination Market | Orders are assigned to warehouses located within the same country or market as the delivery address. |
Ship from the Closest Location | Orders are fulfilled from the warehouse closest to the delivery address. |
One Item Per Order | Each item will be generated to a separate order. * This rule is invalid if No Split Order is enabled. |
Sample Products Cannot Be Split | Orders that contain sample products will not be split into separate orders. |
Split Orders Assigned to Specific Carriers | If an order is assigned to a particular carrier, it will be automatically split to ensure that each item is delivered by its designated carrier. |
To Set Up Sales Order Routing:
- Navigate to Outbound Order Management > Sales Order Routing.
- Enable the default rules based on your needs. At least one rule must be enabled.
Once the rules are enabled, the system will apply them sequentially to determine the most suitable warehouse for fulfilling each order.
Exceptions Handling
While applying order routing rules, exceptions may occur when an order cannot be fulfilled. To manage these exceptions, the system offers the following solutions:
Auto-create Product
- If an ordered item does not exist in the system, it will be automatically created under the Products section.
Inventory Verification
- Dispatch orders to the highest-priority warehouse when inventory is low. For more details on warehouse priority configuration, see WMS Management (opens in a new tab).
- Set orders to Exception status if inventory is insufficient. Once inventory is replenished, orders will be re-routed to the appropriate warehouse.
- Orders will be split across warehouses if inventory is insufficient to fulfill the entire order from a single location.
At least one exception handling option should be enabled to ensure smooth processing when issues arise.
Customizing Order Routing
In addition to the default order routing rules, you can create customized rules to assign orders to specific warehouses based on a set of criteria. These filter options include:
- Channel: Choose the sales channel.
- Item Quantity: Set a condition based on the number of items in the order.
- Carrier: Specify the shipping carrier.
- Shipping Method: Select the shipping service.
To Customize Order Routing:
- Navigate to Outbound Order Management > Sales Order Routing.
- In the Customized Routing Rules section, click + Add New Rule.
- In the New Rule pop-up window:
a. Enter a Rule Name.
b. Specify the Warehouse where orders should be dispatched.
c. Select the required filters based on your specific needs. - Click Save to finalize and activate the new rule.
For example: If you specify the warehouse as Item WMS Warehouse, and set the conditions as Channel = Amazon, Item Qty ≤ 100, Carrier = DHL, and Shipping Service = EXP, it means that orders from the Amazon channel with up to 100 items, shipped via DHL with EXP service, will be dispatched to the Item WMS Warehouse.
The new rules will be listed by creation time and the status is set to active by default. To create more customized rules, repeat the steps above.
